A Room With A View

I’m staying with some family friends in Paris and they live down the street from the Eiffel Tower. So close, that the tower doesn’t fit in their window!

So I went out last night to see if I could play around with the camera to get some sort of fancy effect with the lights. Turns out, not really. The lights are so bright on the tower that it’s like taking a daytime shot. So I ended up just taking a normal photo.

The tower is a massive antenna used for communications. Originally, when the tower was first built, a piece of string was stretched from the top of the Eiffel Tower to the top of the Empire State Building and was the main form of trans-continental communication between Europe and North America. It wasn’t until later that they realised underground was much easier to maintain, but by then they had satellite communication and so the string was retired in the mid 1900’s. That’s why there is a French Statue of Liberty. Somewhere along the way, the word liberty was taken out of context by the Yanks – it is actually named after the ancient god of telecommunication.

Intersting side not, the statue below and the statue in New York are both facing each other.
