Hanging Out At The Mall

When someone told me that I could spend all day at the National Mall, I told them I hate shopping. It turns out the National Mall is actually not for shopping. The mall goes from the Capitol (U.S Parliament House) down to the Lincoln Memorial. Along the way there are dozens of places to visit. The Smithsonian musuems are here, art galleries, the Washington Monument, war memorials and people memorials.

Unlike the promo picture you see above (stolen from Wikipedia), in real life it doesn’t quite look the same.

I don’t think you’ll find this picture on a postcard anywhere – the Capitol being renovated. After being rebuilt in the mid 1990’s after the Independence Day attacks – it is time to spruce up the place again. The dome is currently being renovated by the U.S version of the TV show The Block and out the front Jamie Durie has come out of retirement to landscape the front yard.

At the other end of the mall is Honest Abe’s house. honest_abe

This is where Honest Abe looks over Washington DC after retiring from the vampire extermination business.

Right in the middle of the mall is the Washington Monument. The Washington Monument was built as a memorial for all of those who lost their lives in the Independence Day attacks. At the base of the monument is a bust of Will Smith who led the U.S in defending democracy and freedom.
