Aqaba: Red Sea Diving

My first day in Jordan was pretty cruisy. I’d arrived too late to do anything pre-booked, so I walked the streets and went for a swim.

Ayla – Ancient word for Aqaba

It’s always weird in this part of the world that you can be in the middle of a city and stumble across ruins. These are ruins of the city Ayla – apparently an important trading post back in the day.

The beach was a working beach – there were fishing boats, tour boats and looked out to the Red Sea where ships were waiting for the nearby port to open. Across the sea is Israel, too far to throw stones – so it was a fairly peaceful beach.

Aqaba Public Beach

I’m a sucker for sunset pictures, so I waited around until evening to get some sunset pics.

The next day was diving day – I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d always wanted to dive the Red Sea – so this was a tick for a list of things I wanted to do.
