Wadi Rum was a place with a cool name when I first started looking at what to do in Jordan. It looked like there were some cool places to stay if you are into tents, but I decided on a day trip – although in hindsight, the full experience is probably inclusive of a Bedouin Camp such as this

I’m not 100% sure the Bedouins had glass roofs on their tents, but the sky would be spectacular if you were into sky porn, like this:

In any case – the universe was smiling on me, because the only car available for hire in Aqaba was a 4WD. More expensive than I wanted, but when the Wadi Rum visitor information guy learned I had a 4WD, he said “don’t spend money on a tour. Drive yourself – it is road up to the village then after that you can drive anywhere”
And that is literally what you do. You pick a direction and drive – here is a rough map of the area I drove around – basically about 30000 hectares worth of sand and rocks.

I jumped straight in – with a rental 4WD, there is no need for preparation like lowering tyre pressure or checking the spare. The universe was already smiling on me, so why would I need anything other than some halloumi and olive sandwiches, a couple of bottles of water and a camera.
The scale of Wadi Rum is too big to appreciate in a photo. But here are some of the photos I took:
And in other news, a Bedouin smuggler was caught smuggling things – you can see him on the left. He’s the guy testing out the Jordanian hand cuffs.
