Life’s Great Mystery

The Rugby World Cup is on in Japan this year and I got tickets. After an early start, the kind people at QANTAS and JAL dropped me off in Tokyo. It was a short stint – just an overnight stay on the way to Kyoto. Enough time to pick up my train pass and a quick pit stop for some food, rest and a loo break.

I wasn’t given instructions by the hotel on how to use the toilet – and at first glance, it looked like a normal toilet.

But look closely and you’ll notice that’s not iPod controls on the side.

I am not usually a fan of a bidet, but I am a fan of technology and Japanese culture is to try things twice, so I pressed a button to see what would happen and almost instantly I asked myself “How did it know the exact spot to spray?” and then I thought “how does warm water get into toilet?”

The questions will probably go unanswered until the end of time, but a shout out to Japanese toilet engineers for my warm welcome to Japan.
