Play Hard, Work Maybe….

This is sunset at Varadero, a resort town on the north coast of Cuba. Each night the government has the sun go down at dusk so tourists can take photos of it. The locals are also rationed a single sunset per day.

The beach we are on is about 25km long and is where you come if you need high priced souvenirs or overpriced meals. Canadians come to all-inclusive resorts (all of your accommodation and unlimited meals, drinks, and a sunset per day are included in the price) so that you don’t have to leave your resort at all. This avoids any interaction with local people so you can have a truly relaxing experience by the hotel pool for a week. In their defence though, Canadian pools usually have a sea lion by them, rather than coconut palms.

The locals are pretty fun loving people, I don’t know why you would avoid them. Most are lazy (they will admit it themselves, I’m not having a go at them) because a pretty decent standard of living is provided by the government to all Cubans. So most of the day, you’ll find Cubans drinking, smoking or swimming. This guy and his wife, were doing all three at once. You can’t see it, but in his left hand he had a Cubada (rum and coke).

We don’t have an all inclusive resort we are staying in, so we catch a horse into town or hang out at the beach. This horse had a work experience kid along with the driver, which was good because when the horse broke down, the driver had someone who could get out and push.
